Porini Rhino Camp is a tented safari camp set at the bottom of the Laikipia Plateau in the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, on a gorgeous semi permanent stream.
This high-quality camp is located within Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a vast 90000-acre wildlife area between the Aberdares and the majestic Mount Kenya. The conservancy is home to a variety of animals including the “Big Five”. It is the largest sanctuary in East Africa for the endangered Black Rhino and is also a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees.The camp adopts a philosophy of sustainable and responsible tourism, and aims to generate income for the local Maasai community. The staff and guides are outstanding. Visit the Northern white rhino enclosure, only 7 left in the world and 4 are located in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
Room
Porini Rhino Camp is in a secluded valley, on the banks of a seasonal river and under the shade of acacia trees. The camp consists of just seven spacious and comfortable guest tents, each having been carefully sited to take advantage of the wonderful surrounding views. Each tent is tastefully furnished and has solar-power lighting and ensuite hot shower and flush toilet. The camp is specially designed to have minimum environmental impact (with no permanent structures and using eco-friendly fuel).
Standard Tent
The six tented rooms at Porini Rhino Camp are spaced nicely apart and face out onto the plains and a small watering hole. Each is fully constructed of canvas, even the floor, and has a veranda at the front with a table and chairs. Inside, rugs are spread on the floor and the furniture – including both a double and a single bed, a small writing desk and a luggage stand – is simple and unfussy, lending a slightly homely feel but offering more in the way of practicality than style.
In the en-suite bathroom, separated by a curtain from the main room, you will find a flush toilet, sinks with running water and a bucket shower with hot water brought at a time agreed between you and your tent attendant. Here again, the furniture is of simple wooden construction but it is all very functional and perfectly clean. Toiletries are provided, though note that you won’t find a laundry basket: the camp doesn’t do any laundry.
Dining
There's an alfresco theme when it comes to dining at Porini Rhino: you can enjoy picnic lunches out in the bush while sundowner drinks are served with a view during evening game drives, allowing you to enjoy a beautiful African sunset while out on the savannah. The kitchen bakes fresh bread daily and dinner consists of multiple courses of high quality, locally grown produce, and served in the dining area. On warm and clear nights, dinner may be enjoyed under the stars.
